Illegal pressure tactics: TAT rules in favour of the STL

UPDATE, APRIL 18 - 7:20 p.m. | In its April 18 ruling (PDF), the Tribunal administratif du travail (TAT) found that there had indeed been concerted action by union members to engage in illegal pressure tactics.

Since the beginning of last week, the drivers’ refusal to work overtime and fill assignments on school bus routes has resulted in service disruptions leading to the cancellation of close to 1,000 trips and affecting over 15,000 riders. What’s more, intimidation has been used to force some drivers to refuse overtime.

The STL took the matter before the TAT last week to put an end to such pressure tactics. The TAT has ruled in favour of the STL and ordered the union to comply right away and take all measures necessary to ensure that its members stopped using illegal pressure tactics effective immediately. Consequently, the STL expects that things will go back to normal promptly for its customers.

In February, the STL submitted an arbitration proposal to the drivers’ union to end the labour dispute. Unfortunately, instead of breaking the stalemate in negotiations, the union rejected the STL’s proposal. The next round of mediated talks is scheduled for April 27.

Once again, the STL regrets that its customers had to pay the price for this illegal concerted action.

How can you find out if your bus has been cancelled?

There are different ways you can get the latest network status updates and understand what’s going on. We do our best to set up alerts for your routes and stops in the event of delays or cancellations. However, we cannot always notify you in time, especially when dealing with last-minute cancellations.
Here’s what you can do to stay informed:

  • Go to the Alerts and advisories page to see all the alerts in effect.
  • Text your bus stop number to 511785 to see the next scheduled buses in real time.
  • Track your bus using the online trip planner.
  • Create a personalized account on our website to receive alerts about your favourite routes and stops (by email or text).
  • Call the Customer Contact Centre (450-688-6520) for bus service updates. You may have to wait for an agent if call volumes are high.
