The Société de transport de Laval (STL) today submitted an arbitration proposal to the drivers’ union. Over the past two years, there have been 34 negotiation meetings in addition to 10 mediated sessions and a recent closed-door meeting between the two parties. The STL regrets the union’s decision and finds it hard to understand why the union rejected a solution that would have ended the stalemate. This ongoing situation needlessly hurts transit users and hinders the organization’s efforts to revive public transit.
The STL would like to reiterate that it has been acting in good faith throughout the entire process, adjusting its offer a number of times and withdrawing many of its initial requests to focus on the main issues, while staying within the approved financial envelope.
Public transit has been profoundly disrupted by the pandemic over the past two years, and has recently taken another hit because of Omicron. This situation has led to a significant drop in ridership and a considerable decline in revenue for all transit agencies in the metropolitan area.
