Payment options

There are several ways to pay your fare on the STL bus network.

Find the option that best fits your travel habits.

Pay onboard the bus

Didn’t purchase your fare before boarding? You can buy your transit fare directly on the bus.

A single trip on the STL bus network costs $3.75 and includes a transfer to other STL buses.

Debit card

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
  • Allows you to instantly pay a single regular fare onboard all STL buses.
  • A transfer is automatically included.
  • Valid on STL buses only.

Terms of use

  • You must use a contactless chip debit card. Simply tap your card on the reader when boarding (non-chip debit cards are not accepted).
  • The exact amount for a single regular fare will be charged (no additional fees). No receipt will be issued.
  • You can pay for a group of up to 5 people using the same debit card at the same boarding.
  • Tap your card once per person, waiting 3 seconds between each payment (maximum of 5 payments).

IMPORTANT A $18.75 pre-authorization will be placed on your bank account when you pay by debit card. You must therefore have a minimum balance of $18.75 in your account to complete a transaction. The pre-authorization will appear on your statement the same day and will disappear the next morning. Only the actual amount corresponding to the number of trips taken that day will be charged. This works similarly to pre-authorizations at gas stations.

If your debit payment is declined
The pre-authorization is processed 15 minutes after you tap your card when boarding. This means your payment may appear accepted at first, even if your balance is below $18.75. If you tap again after this 15-minute delay (for a transfer), the payment may then be declined. You will need to pay using another payment method.

Outstanding balance recovery
If a payment is declined, the system will attempt to recover the amount during your next debit transaction, until sufficient funds are available in your account. Your debit card will be declined onboard until the outstanding amount has been recovered.

Solution made possible by the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM).

Credit card

  • A transfer is automatically included.
  • Valid on STL buses only.

Terms of use

  • You must use a contactless chip credit card. Simply tap your card on the reader when boarding.
  • Only the exact amount for a single regular fare will be charged (no additional fees). No receipt will be issued.

Accepted cards and devices

  • Visa or Mastercard credit cards
  • Mobile payment with an iPhone
  • Google Pay (Visa) on Android devices

Cash

  • Allows you to pay a single regular fare by depositing the exact amount in coins into the farebox.

Terms of use

  • Exact amount or higher is accepted in coins in the farebox.
  • No change is given by the driver, and paper bills are not accepted.

Transfers with an onboard fare

  • A transfer with an onboard fare allows you to transfer from one STL route to another during the same trip, without having to pay or use another fare to reach your destination. It is valid for boarding multiple STL routes during your trip, in any direction.
  • A transfer cannot be used on the same bus route (in either direction).

The validity of your transfer depends on your fare or payment method, as explained below.

  • If you pay onboard with cash, you will receive a paper transfer. You must ask the driver for it. This transfer is valid for 120 minutes on the STL network only. It can be used to board multiple STL bus routes during the same trip.
  • If you pay onboard with a debit or credit card, a transfer valid for 120 minutes is automatically included for the STL network.
You do not need a paper transfer, as it is recorded in the system.
  • The system will recognize your debit or credit card when you board multiple STL bus routes during the same trip. This is why the driver will not provide a paper transfer for this payment method.

OPUS card and occasional cards

To purchase fares before boarding, several options are available.

OPUS card

  • Allows you to load up to four different fare types.
  • All Modes fares (AB, ABC, ABCD) — including monthly, 1, 2 and 10 trips — can be loaded onto an OPUS card. In some cases, a second OPUS card may be required.
  • Available at all points of sale (regular OPUS card without photo only) and at metropolitan ticket offices (with or without photo).
  • Can be replaced upon expiry and recycled in Electrobac bins located near the metropolitan ticket offices at Montmorency and Cartier terminals.
  • The only accepted payment method for shared taxi service.
  • Must be tapped on the OPUS reader when boarding.
  • Fee of $6 for a regular OPUS card and $15 for an OPUS card with photo.
  • You can quickly check the fares loaded on your OPUS card or reload it using the Chrono mobile app.

Occasional smart card

Allows you to load Bus fares and All Modes fares (AB, ABC, ABCD) — including 1, 2 or 10 trips — as well as 24‑hour, 3‑day, Unlimited Evening and Unlimited Weekend passes.
Ideal for occasional use if you do not have an OPUS card. A transfer is automatically included with each fare loaded.

Transfers with an OPUS or occasional card

A transfer allows you to switch from one route to another during the same trip, without having to pay or use another fare to reach your destination.
It is valid for boarding multiple routes during your trip, in any direction.

A transfer cannot be used on the same bus, métro or train line (in either direction).

The validity of your transfer depends on your fare or payment method, as explained below.

With any monthly fare, no paper transfer is required. Only one fare will be deducted, even if you tap your card each time you board during your trip. Simply tap your OPUS card at each boarding. Please note that for two trips on the same line with a monthly fare, a 5‑minute delay is required between taps. If you tap again within 5 minutes, your card will not be accepted. This measure helps prevent fraud.

A Bus fare includes a transfer valid for 120 minutes. Your fare can be used to board multiple bus routes during the same trip. Transfers are valid on STL, exo, RTL and STM bus networks.

An All Modes fare includes a transfer valid for 120 minutes. Your fare can be used to board multiple bus, train, métro or REM services during the same trip. Transfers are valid on the STL, exo, RTL, STM and REM networks. You can make as many transfers as needed within the networks covered by your fare—but never on the same line.
