Farebox
The farebox, located at the front of the bus near the driver, is used to collect cash payments and to issue and validate paper transfers.
There are several ways to pay your fare on the STL bus network.
Find the option that best fits your travel habits.
Didn’t purchase your fare before boarding? You can buy your transit fare directly on the bus.
A single trip on the STL bus network costs $3.75 and includes a transfer to other STL buses.

IMPORTANT A $18.75 pre-authorization will be placed on your bank account when you pay by debit card. You must therefore have a minimum balance of $18.75 in your account to complete a transaction. The pre-authorization will appear on your statement the same day and will disappear the next morning. Only the actual amount corresponding to the number of trips taken that day will be charged. This works similarly to pre-authorizations at gas stations.
If your debit payment is declined
The pre-authorization is processed 15 minutes after you tap your card when boarding. This means your payment may appear accepted at first, even if your balance is below $18.75. If you tap again after this 15-minute delay (for a transfer), the payment may then be declined. You will need to pay using another payment method.
Outstanding balance recovery
If a payment is declined, the system will attempt to recover the amount during your next debit transaction, until sufficient funds are available in your account. Your debit card will be declined onboard until the outstanding amount has been recovered.

A transfer allows you to switch from one route to another during the same trip, without having to pay or use another fare to reach your destination.
It is valid for boarding multiple routes during your trip, in any direction.
A transfer cannot be used on the same bus, métro or train line (in either direction).
The validity of your transfer depends on your fare or payment method, as explained below.
With any monthly fare, no paper transfer is required. Only one fare will be deducted, even if you tap your card each time you board during your trip. Simply tap your OPUS card at each boarding. Please note that for two trips on the same line with a monthly fare, a 5‑minute delay is required between taps. If you tap again within 5 minutes, your card will not be accepted. This measure helps prevent fraud.
A Bus fare includes a transfer valid for 120 minutes. Your fare can be used to board multiple bus routes during the same trip. Transfers are valid on STL, exo, RTL and STM bus networks.
An All Modes fare includes a transfer valid for 120 minutes. Your fare can be used to board multiple bus, train, métro or REM services during the same trip. Transfers are valid on the STL, exo, RTL, STM and REM networks. You can make as many transfers as needed within the networks covered by your fare—but never on the same line.
