STL bus drivers to strike Dec. 18–19 ― Union refuses to provide bus service to public on these two days

After receiving the third strike notice from the drivers’ union for Saturday, December 18, and Sunday, December 19, the Société de transport de Laval (STL) had asked the union to provide at least minimum service to the public. The STL’s request was rejected by the union. The STL regrets the union’s decision to leave Laval residents without any public transit for the whole weekend right before the Holidays. This decision needlessly hurts transit users. Not to mention local businesses that will inevitably suffer the consequences of this lack of transit service. The STL still believes in reaching a settlement through negotiations, not through actions that hurt transit users.

Recall that public transit is severely impacted by the pandemic, resulting in a significant drop in ridership and a considerable decline in revenues for the entire metropolitan region. In Laval, ridership has returned to about 65% of the 2019 level.

As the STL continues to navigate these challenging financial times, it has just recently renewed collective agreements with the maintenance and clerical workers’ unions. The overall proposal made to the union is fair and comparable to those agreements.

NO BUS SERVICE ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18 AND SUNDAY, DECEMBER 19

No STL bus will be running in Laval as of 4 a.m. Saturday until service resumes at 4 a.m. Monday, December 20.

The following routes will also be CANCELLED:

  • 360 shuttle bus to downtown Laval
  • Illumi shuttle bus
  • Place Bell shuttle bus

No impact and regular service maintained:

  • All shared taxi routes
  • Paratransit service
  • However, delays are to be expected as there will be an increase in ridership

STL management sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience that the bus drivers’ strike may cause transit users and finds it unfortunate that the union has made that decision despite ongoing negotiations.
