Student Opus card with photo ID

To qualify for a student Opus card with photo ID, you must be a high school student or full-time student. You need this card in order to access reduced or student fares, whichever apply to you. The process for obtaining or renewing student Opus cards with photo ID varies depending on your age and your student status.

Students ages 12 to 17

To qualify for a student Opus card with photo ID and reduced fares for youth ages 12 to 17, you must be less than 18 years old on October 31 of the current school year. All students ages 16 and over must provide proof of full-time study.

How much does an Opus card with photo ID cost?

The card costs $15 and is non-refundable.

When should I get my card?

Cards are available starting August 1 before the school year begins.

When should I renew my card?

Students ages 12 to 14: Cards must be renewed every two years, before the expiry date indicated on the back of the card.

Students ages 15 to 17: No later than October 31 of each year, as indicated on the back of the card. (Your card won’t work after it expires on October 31.)

Where can I get my card?

At school during the STL’s Back-to-School Tour, in a Metropolitan ticket office or by mail.

You can obtain or renew your card online if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are enrolled at a participating educational institution (refer to Online orders below).
  • You are a full-time student.
  • You hold a student card from your educational institution.
  • You have a Quebec mailing address.
  • You are able to pay the $15 cost by credit card.

How to schedule an appointment to obtain or renew my card at Metropolitain ticket office?

Until further notice, Opus cards with photo ID will be issued and renewed by appointment only to foster social distancing at ticket offices. Make sure you’ve completed all of the required documents and to have them on you when leaving for your appointment.

What documents do I need to show to obtain or renew my card during the Back-to-School Tour or at a Metropolitain ticket office?

Students ages 12 to 15:

  • A completed Application Form – OPUS card with photo ID (PDF) signed by a parent (for students age 12 or 13) or signed by you (for students age 14 or 15).
  • Proof of age (provincial health card, birth certificate or passport).
  • $15 cash or on debit / credit card.

Students ages 16 to 17:

  • A letter confirming your enrolment at school (must be a digital copy) downloaded from your student portal OR a completed application form (make sure that you print all the pages and that the section reserved for your school has been signed and stamped).
  • Proof of age (provincial health card, driver’s licence, birth certificate or passport).
  • $15 cash or on debit / credit card.

What documents do I need to show to obtain or renew my card by mail?

If you are 12 to 15 years old as of October 31 of the school year:

  • The original Reduced-fare student Opus card application form for mail delivery (PDF), duly completed and signed by a parent (for students age 12 or13) or signed by you (for students ages 14 or 15). No photocopies accepted.
  • An original, recent, passport-style photo of your face: size 2 x 2 ou 1 x 1 1/4. Photocopies are not accepted. No hat or sunglasses in photo.
  • A photocopy of one of the following government-issued IDs in French or English: health insurance card, driver’s licence, passport, permanent resident card or asylum seeker document. This photocopy will be returned to you. Student cards are NOT eligible forms of ID.
  • Payment of $15 by one of the following methods:

- Bank transfer, indicating the relevant account holder information (section 3 or form).

- Personal cheque/money order/bank draft. Please mail with your application form. Make payment out to Gestion Termico.

If you are 16 or 17 years old as of October 31 of the school year:

Form is valid for 30 days after being signed by the institution. After this time, it is considered expired and can no longer be used.

  • You study part-time in two different institutions, but your total course load or credits is equivalent to full-time study.
  • You do not have a Quebec mailing address.
  • You use paratransit services.
  • You are not eligible for online orders or you prefer to receive in-person service.

Frequently asked questions

How long will it take to receive my Opus card?

At a metropolitan ticket office or during the school tour, your Opus card with photo is given to you instantly.

For online orders, expect a delivery time of 7 to 10 days. If you have not received your card after 7 working days, contact our Customer Contact Center.

Can I renew my card online if I am enrolled in part-time study?

You must be a full-time student in order to be eligible for student fares. If you study part-time in two different institutions, but your total course load or credits is equivalent to full-time study, then you are eligible for a student Opus card with photo ID and student fares. However, you won’t be able to place online orders. Instead, please go to a Metropolitan ticket office and make sure you bring all required documents with you.

I lost a card that was still valid. Can I order a new card online?

Yes. We will contact you to confirm your order and then we’ll send you a new student Opus card with photo ID. Please contact our Customer Service Centre if you require assistance.

What happens if I order a card online even though I already have a valid card for this year?

Simply mention the error when we contact you to confirm your order and we’ll cancel it. No new card will be sent out. To request a refund of the $15 new card fee, please contact our Customer Service Centre.
